MOVIE GUIDE: 20 Days In Mariupol (2023)

On the early hours of February 24th 2022 after days of a tense uncertainty and without any provocation or reason, Russia invaded Ukraine. It was the largest armed conflict to erupt on European soil since the end of World War Two. A swift advance of the Russian troops took control on great portions of Ukraine territory and among those large cities facing the invaders was Mariupol. There, besieged and encircled by the enemy and with little options to flee, Mstylav Chernov an Ukrainian AP reporter and Pulitzer price winner decided to stay to document to battle for survival of this once beautiful port city. Chernov offers a harrowing and courageous account of the early days of the invasion in a place filled of civilians who often asked themselves one simple questions: Why us? We witness first hand his struggle to document the pain and the atrocities of the city’s bloody siege and more important, what’s like to cover an armed conflict. Moral and personal issues all intertwined to get the job done, as Chernov himself warn us: “This is painful to watch… but it must be painful to watch”
