Celebrating Strength and Culture: The inauguration of our school’s new space in Little River, Miami

HOLA LITTLE RIVER. we’re here to stay.

we want to add to Miami's cultural landscape. the inauguration of the brand-new space at our Roberto Mata School of Photography in Little River is solid proof of that. our opening marked not only a significant milestone for the school but also celebrated the photographic project titled "Cholitas Bravas" by the talented photographer Celia dLuna. The project, as Luna herself passionately declares, is a tribute to the resilience, strength, and culture of the indigenous Cholitas women in Bolivia. here, we'll dive into the heartwarming story behind "Cholitas Bravas" and how we wanted to give it a home in the vibrant city of Miami.

Celia dLuna, a strong photographer and a member of Roberto Mata school of photography’s faculty, embarked on a mission that resonates deeply with her personal background. Born and raised in the Andes of Peru by a single mother, Luna understands the strength of women and the richness of culture in her DNA. It's this very DNA that fueled her desire to explore and capture the essence of the Cholitas women.

The term 'Cholita' was once a derogatory label for young Indigenous women in Bolivia. However, Luna's project shines a light on their remarkable transformation. Today, Cholitas proudly embrace their roots, wearing traditional clothing not as a symbol of oppression but as a means to break ethnic barriers and celebrate their unique heritage. Luna's connection to this cause was only heightened by her similar background from a neighboring country, where she shares a deep affinity with these women.

What makes Celia Luna's photographic project even more special is the role played by her mother. Luna's decision to undertake this incredible journey was not a solitary one; she brought her mother along as her assistant. The bond between Luna and her mother is a testament to the enduring strength of women. When presented with the opportunity to embark on this adventure, Luna's mother, without hesitation, said yes.

The mother-daughter duo, armed with their cameras and unyielding spirit, set out to meet and capture the Cholitas women in all their glory. Their collaboration symbolizes the intergenerational transfer of strength, culture, and love that Luna's project exemplifies. It's a poignant reminder that the support and shared passions between generations can lead to remarkable achievements.

The inauguration of the new space at the Roberto Mata School of Photography provided the perfect setting to showcase the "Cholitas Bravas" project. The school, known for nurturing talent and fostering photographic expression, has found a worthy partner in Celia dLuna's work. The new space not only stands as a testament to the school's commitment to photography but also as a platform for photographers like dLuna to showcase their creative endeavors.

The coverage by esteemed publications like Prodavinci and El Pitazo further solidifies the school's role as a significant player in Miami's photographic education landscape.
